A story...because for now my heart is otherwise occupied

In the Beginning

Proverbs 1:5-6
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels
To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings

John 1 (King James Version)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not

Ps 111:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction

And this twas the Beginning of such a Proverb

We first heard her first, as we enter into the gates of the city.  Her voice was gentle, but with an authority as we had never heard before.  We were drawn by her dark tales, and riddles that left many wondering.  All but the most mature, the elders, were dismayed at their lack of understanding.

One day a runner went forth and called us all to the town's well.

There she sat, hands folding upon her lap, her eyes bright and knowing.  She was not proud or haughty, but she was righteous.

"Hear, for I will speak excellent things and the opening of my lips shall be right things"

We were drawn instantly, will she finally reveal the secret to her sages?  Will her dark sayings now be revealed?
We sat, no I sat down, never once my eyes straying from her mouth and I listened as she spoke.

"All of the words from my mouth are in righteousness, there is nothing froward or perverse in them."  She paused and looked right into my eyes

"They are plain to him that understands, and right to them that find knowledge"  She stretched out her hand as if she were beckoning then "Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it"

"Who are you, that we should listen?   You are but a woman!" someone cried from the crowd.  They began to murmur  and my heart grew heavy as some picked up their coats and began to walk away.

She simply smiled, "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Council is mine, and sound wisdom.

She paused for effect and then announced:

"I am Understanding: I have strength"

As Wisdom continued to speak, my eyes caught glimpse of a young man who sat next to a woman who was dressed in purple.  Every once in awhile he would lean down and whisper into her ear, and she'd giggle.  Try as I might I could not concentrate of what Wisdom was speaking about, my eyes continually strayed to the young man who hands played with ribbons that the woman wore in her hair.

This woman, she was beautiful, one could see just how she was a distraction.  Her eyes were coy and she smiled freely.  When she taunted, her lips became pouty, and the young man was enamored.

I could not help but compare the two women...One sat with silent strength, while the other was flirtatious and fun.  They both sat in public and were admired by many.  As if she knew what I was thinking, wisdom then began a new tale

"There once was a foolish woman.who was simple, knowing nothing."

She sits at the door of her house, and calls out to men that pass her by as they went about their business.  Like calls to like and the simple-minded turned towards her door.
Once inside, she wrapped her arms around his waist whispered ever so sweetly,

" Stolen Waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant"

However, that simple man, as he began to eat and drink like one famished, he didn't see the poison there upon the table.  Behind her bedroom door, there was a secret hall, and down the hall there were stairs that lead down, down down...down straight into hell, where her other guest forever now lie.
